How it all began

The Malaysian Animation Association (ANIMAS) is a non-profit non-governmental organization established in 2001. The association was founded by Pak Hassan Abdul Muthalib, Kamn Ismail and Hisham Harun Hashim. It was officially registered with the Malaysian Department of Organizations in 2007.

The members of this association consist of animation activists, local animation workforce, animation lecturers and educators and various related parties. To date, ANIMAS has around 2,000 members from the Malaysian animation industry and oversees 20 animation studios under its umbrella.

ANIMAS is a non-profitable organization (NGO), formed in MALAYSIA year 2001. It was officially registered by the Registrar of Societies in 2007. The members of this association consist of practitioners, activists and 2D, 3D animation enthusiasts as well as various animated genre and visual graphics. ANIMAS has a clear objective to promote the animation industry with creating local animation that can affect the local and international market.

ANIMAS is committed to fostering greater awareness of local animation arts and educating the community on the importance of respecting the intellectual property and copyrights of animated works.

With a variety of planned activities and programs, ANIMAS aims to meet its objectives and promote local culture and creativity, ensuring alignment with its mission to uplift the animation industry.

Objectives of ANIMAS

Encourage and popularize art knowledge and local animation among Malaysians.

Protect the welfare of members and enhance their economy for a better quality of life.

Help educate knowledge about the importance of respecting animation copyright.

Executive Committee

The ANIMAS Executive Committee, composed of industry experts, drives Malaysia’s animation scene by supporting members, fostering collaboration, and promoting innovation. Their leadership ensures members’ voices are heard and the community thrives.

PRESIDENT

Zahrin Zamzuri

Zahrin bin Zamzuri, professionally recognized as Kartunis Jakalll, has amassed an impressive 20-year tenure in the fields of comics and animation. He is the Founder and CEO of Jakalll Studio Sdn Bhd since 2014. Acknowledged as a Pakar Industri Negara (DPiN) by the Department of Skills Development and Ministry of Human Resources in Malaysia, he has also earned the prestigious 'PRO' designation as an Animation Director from CCiG. Zahrin has been honored with the "Anugerah Kolaborasi Kreatif Animasi" Award by RKKM & Animas, underscoring his significant contributions to the industry.

His involvement in formulating National Occupational Skills Standards (NOSS) under JPK highlights his commitment to advancing the sector. Zahrin's influence extends to his engagement in intellectual dialogues and forums organized by Myipo, where he serves as a panelist, and as a distinguished speaker and mentor at Aswara's Animation Faculty. His numerous award nominations, including Best Animation, Voice Over, and Character Design at Finas & Animas, underscore his enduring impact and creative excellence within Malaysia's animation landscape. Noteworthy is the recognition of his studio, Jakalll Studio, as one of the Top 10 Best Animation Companies in Asia by Business Outlook Magazine for the year 2024

Ahmad Firdaus Abd Razif

A philanthropist with a penchant for generating wealth and a keen sense of business acumen, our benefactor has been instrumental in supporting the multimedia industry. His astute decision-making has enabled his company to achieve international prominence.

With his innovative thinking, he is poised to elevate the organization to unparalleled heights of success. With twenty years of experience dedicated to the craft of animation, his insightful guidance sheds light on both the perspective of the producer and the essence of production. Proficient in all aspects of the creative process, he serves as a respected mentor, elevating the field of animation in Malaysia towards new horizons. A think tank, a consultant, a mentor, a patronage, a friends and a family, he wore different hat in life in order to become where he is today.

VICE PRESIDENT

Khairul Rizal Jalani

Since 1996, Khairul Rizal Jalani has been actively engaged in the production of Malaysia's first animated series, "Usop Sontorian," developed in collaboration with Kharisma Picture Sdn Bhd for broadcast on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) until mid-1997. Subsequently, a transition to Animasi Fine Animation Sdn Bhd occurred, where contributions were made to several series such as "Yokies," "Frootes," "Kenyalang," "Abang Sidi," and "Alif," all tailored for airing on RTM and the nationwide screening of "Putih."

In 2003, following tenure with the aforementioned company, a freelance career path was embarked upon, encompassing roles encompassing voice acting, animation artistry, character design, scriptwriting, and storyboarding for a variety of animation studios, local advertising agencies, and governmental broadcasting entities up to the present day.

SECRETARY

Samsudin Awang

Shamsudin Bin Awang has a distinguished career background, notably holding the position of Head of Corporate Communications at the Ministry of Domestic Trade in Putrajaya. Alongside his role as a lecturer at the Faculty of Communication & Media Studies, UiTM Shah Alam, he has also garnered experience as a photojournalist for The New Straits Times Press group in Pahang.

Acknowledging his contributions, the Government of Pahang has honored him with two state distinctions, namely the SMP and AMP. Proficient in cinematography and film, Shamsudin is a registered member of FDAM, highlighting his profound influence within the realms of media and communication.

TREASURER

Mohd Hafiz Abd Samad

Mohd Hafiz is an experienced animator with a distinguished career in the Malaysian animation industry, having worked with prestigious studios such as Lensa Filem, Vision Animation, and Inspedia. Since 2018, he has been a part of Red Circle Studio, where he serves as Project Manager for the Robozeta and Anom Animation Series. He oversees the entire production process, ensuring smooth operations and high-quality outcomes.

His dedication, leadership, and industry expertise significantly benefit his team and projects. With his demonstrated experience in overseeing production teams within budgetary constraints, he has showcased adept financial management skills that are poised to be advantageous for the association in his role as treasurer.

AUDITOR

Asrulhisyam Ahmad

Mr, Asrulhisyam Bin Ahamd has been in the industry behind the lenses for longer than a decade. His humble beginnings as 2D animator with Kharisma Pictures where he helped to create memorable characters like Usop Sontorian and Yokies has steadily raised him up to the position of Lead Visual effect in the production of the Tuah Animation Series. From 2D he moved up to 3D animator with NuMedia Sapura IT in 2002. Two Years after that, he boldly took the leap of faith to start his own company, Imagebox. With Imagebox, Black has successfully produced and sometimes directed television series such as Orak Arek, Career Expose, X-Wave, Skuad Elit and numerous commercials for Maybank2U, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation for the National Angkasawan Campaign and corporate videos. And again he boldly took another leap of faith to produced a full feature film ‘Antoo Fighter’ in the year 2006, a CGI dependent film of which Black has successfully encompassed the skill, capacity and capability to showcase his talent with
Computer Generated Images CGI production.

His talents has garnered him accolades and accreditation by his fellow peers. His talent has won him PPFM Oskar Best 3D Animator, Best Editor and Best Visual Effect awards in 2002 and again his talent was recognized by the industry when he won PPFM Oskar for Best 3D Animator, Best 3D Animation and Best Visual Effect Film for the film AntooFighter. These bold moves by Black eventually has led him to be appreciated by Grand Brilliance to assign him to direct his first full feature horror flick, ‘Sesuatu Yang Tertinggal’ , “Pecah” and Legenda Kaling”. Bold steps has made Black to boldly go ahead and face the challenge.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY

Dr. Jon Suraya

Suraya Binti Md Nasir, professionally known as Jonsuraya, is a distinguished figure in the realms of art, design, and animation. Holding a Doctor of Arts in Manga from Kyoto Seika University, a Master of Art and Design from Universiti Teknologi Mara, and a Bachelor of Social Science from International Islamic University Malaysia, she has established herself as an expert in the field. Serving as a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris since 2021, Jonsuraya imparts knowledge on pre-production animation while overseeing curriculum enhancements. With a wealth of industry experience, including freelance work in comic artistry for Komik Maple, authoring the "Jejon Di Jepun" series, and collaborating with various publications and studios, Jonsuraya's contributions have been widely acclaimed. Her accolades include prestigious awards such as the MSC Malaysia Intellectual Property Creators Challenge and the Monbugakakusho: MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship. Beyond her professional endeavors, she actively participates in community initiatives and research ventures focusing on participatory ethno- animation and virtual classroom dynamics. Jonsuraya's multifaceted background underscores her dedication to the advancement of art, design, and animation disciplines.
EXCO MEDIA & COMMUNICATION

Azwan Abd Karim

Azwan Abdul Karim, born in December 1977 in Jerantut, Pahang, Malaysia, graduated with a major in Fine Art, Sculpture from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sri Iskandar Perak in 2003. He completed his Master's in Fine Art Technology from UiTM Shah Alam in 2007 and is currently pursuing his PhD in Transforming Sculpture Technology at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), expected to graduate in 2022. He began his career as an Art Lecturer at Baitulmal Skill Institute, Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan in 2004 and has been teaching Fine Art at the Faculty of Creative Technology and Heritage, Malaysia Kelantan University since 2015. With over 16 years of experience, Azwan specializes in contemporary art using various media, focusing on transforming sculpture with toy action figures. He has also taught part-time in Animation 2D and 3D and Industrial Design at institutions like ASWARA, UNIKL, and Universiti Malaya (UM). Azwan has actively exhibited his work and won numerous awards since primary school.

Notable achievements include winning the First Prize in the Triple Threat Challenge Transformers Design Competition in the USA (2010), the Grand Prize at the Visual Art Competition Pameran Media Seni VIII Universiti Malaya (2009), and the 2nd Place in the National Competition (Sculpture) by the Malaysian Ministry of Health (2005). His works are part of collections at Universal Studio Singapore, Galeri Seni UPSI, UiTM, Chanseleri UM,
Malaysia International Toy Fair, and various international private collections in the USA, UK, Australia, Singapore, and local private collectors.

Mohamad Hafifi Johari

Commencing my career as a 3D artist in 1996 at a distinguished jewelry firm, I cultivated a foundation of creativity and precision. In 1998, I co-founded a pioneering Cyber Cafe in Shah Alam, demonstrating early entrepreneurial acumen in the digital realm. Transitioning to academia in 2003, I served as a lecturer at Bidari Ehsan Skill Academy Montevest - Sibertek, imparting expertise in digital arts and fostering a new generation of talent. In 2005, I advanced to Kelembai Studio Sdn. Bhd. as a Compositor and Editor, refining my skills in visual storytelling and post-production excellence.

In 2007, alongside visionary partners, I co-founded Psychotek Sdn. Bhd. As one of the director, driving strategic initiatives and pioneering innovative multimedia solutions. This marked a pivotal moment where I led dynamic teams and spearheaded groundbreaking projects in digital media. Elevating my leadership trajectory, I assumed the role of company director at Red Circle Studio in 2013, collaborating with esteemed partners to navigate and achieve organizational excellence in creative ventures.

Muhammad Faries Fitry

A young and ambitious newcomer to the creative industry who has great hope and vision. Graduated as Best Graduate of the Animation and Multimedia Faculty from Akademi Seni Budaya & Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA). Diploma in Animation & Multimedia. Disciple of Marzuki bin Abdullah, also known as Kidol, is a seasoned animation industry veteran. A student representative in the faculty. Active with club’s activities as Club’s Advisor organizing and handling events without ignoring the importance of studying.

In 2020, was given a chance to do an internship at Red Circle Studio for a few months before being absorbed as a full-fledged creative industry player. Learned a lot from the seniors during the four years of service in the company. In 2024, during the Annual Meeting of Animas, none other than the recently appointed President of Animas 2024 himself put his trust in a young industry player such as myself to become one of the committee members of Animas. Seeking to bring the vision and voices of fellow newcomers in the industry to create a harmonious, future-proof, and healthy ecosystem of the local creative industry for the younger generation to come.

Dr. Mohd Rosli

With over 22 years of dedication to art and design, Dr. Mohd Rosli Arshad has established himself as a distinguished academician and practitioner in the fields of New Media, 3D Animation, Game Art, and Film & Visual Effects. His journey in higher education began with his foundational studies in Graphic Design, Film and Animation, and New Media at a prestigious Malaysian institution. Dr. Rosli significantly contributed to the animation landscape by initiating the animation program at Universiti Kuala Lumpur – Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (UniKL – MIIT) in 2002. He furthered his academic pursuit by earning a Doctoral degree from Dongseo University, Korea. His career encompasses substantial contributions to animation projects, securing notable research funding from both academic and industry sources.

In 2007 he served as a committee member for the national animation society called ANIMAS, organizing local animation events and projects and recently he has been reappointed back as an Academic Committee for 2024- 2025. Currently, he holds the position of Head of Section for Visual Arts and Entertainment at UniKL-MIIT, overseeing academic affairs and as a Head of AVR Lab (Augmented/Virtual Reality Lab) at UniKL-MIIT which operates as a special project to produce an immersive learning environment in AR/VR experiences for eLearning contents. He also co-established the Visual Effects Malaysia User Group in 2011 and the EDUMATION group in 2019 to unite Malaysia's practitioners and academicians. His influence expanded globally with the invitations to speak at local and international seminars and as a paper reviewer at conferences. Before becoming an academician, he worked in Advertising and Multimedia Companies for several years.

Dr. Mohd Ekram Alhafis

Mohd Ekram Alhafis Hashim, a distinguished lecturer specializing in new media, holds a Ph.D. in the same field. With a rich background spanning over 15 years in the Malaysian arts sphere, he has been at the forefront of introducing innovative experimental animations. Dr. Ekram's commitment to comics and motion comics has led to the creation of pioneering and impactful works. Presently, he is delving into avant-garde technologies, producing augmented reality and virtual reality comics to enhance interactivity and embrace a futuristic artistic approach. Serving as a lecturer in animation and digital gaming at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), he imparts knowledge and expertise, molding the next generation in the realms of digital art and new media.

Anuar Shariff

Anuar bin Shariff shines as a luminary within the Malaysian animation realm, his odyssey commencing with the inception of the nation's inaugural TV animated saga, "Usop Sontorian." His illustrious path has intertwined with esteemed creations such as "Yokies," "Keluang Man," "Kumang," "KeZoo," and "Misi Ady," while also leaving an indelible mark on global stages through endeavors like Disney Channel's "Astra Force." Bestowed with the title of National Industry Expert (DPIN) in 2014, his mastery and sway in Malaysia's animation domain stand as a testament to his artistry.
